Toner cartridge yield explained: standard vs high yield for HP 26A, 58A, 414A and 508A
Page yield is a laboratory measurement, not an estimate. Monochrome cartridge yields are declared under ISO/IEC 19752 and colour cartridge yields under ISO/IEC 19798, both based on continuous printing of a standard test suite at approximately 5% page coverage. A "high yield" cartridge — HP's X suffix — is the same cartridge body carrying more toner, and it almost always lowers cost per page while raising cost per box. The only honest way to compare two cartridges is cartridge price divided by rated yield, using yields declared under the same standard.
What does "page yield" actually measure?
The ISO/IEC standards define a repeatable test: a defined suite of test pages printed continuously until the cartridge reaches end of life, on a specified printer configuration, with a stated number of cartridges and printers averaged. The suite averages about 5% coverage of the printable area per page for monochrome. Coverage is the variable that matters: a page of dense tables, a form with heavy rules, or a report with a full-width header can run two to three times that, and the cartridge will deliver proportionally fewer pages. Nothing is wrong with the cartridge — the documents are simply denser than the test suite.
Two practical consequences. First, a yield figure quoted without naming its standard is not comparable to anything, and you should ask for the standard by name. Second, your own realised yield is the number that should drive reordering; track pages printed between cartridge changes for a quarter and you will have a better planning figure than any published number.

Cartridge families are not interchangeable across these groups, and the A and X versions within a family fit the same printers. Check the exact printer model number on the device label — "LaserJet Pro" alone is not enough to identify a cartridge.
How to compare on cost per page
The formula is one line:
Cost per page = cartridge price ÷ declared yield
For colour, add the black CPP and each of the three colour CPPs to get a full-colour page cost; for a mixed workload, weight by your actual colour share.

In this illustration the high-yield cartridge costs 125% more per box but 32% less per page. That is the usual shape of the trade-off, and it is why "we bought the cheaper one" is frequently the more expensive decision over a year. Run the arithmetic with the prices actually quoted to you — the ratio varies by family and by supplier.
When standard yield is the right answer
High yield is not automatically correct. Choose standard yield when:
- The printer is low volume. A device printing 300 pages a month will hold a 10,000-page cartridge for nearly three years. Toner does not spoil quickly, but capital sitting in a supply closet for three years is still capital sitting in a supply closet.
- The device is near end of life or under a pending refresh. Stranded high-yield inventory for a retired printer is pure loss.
- Your card limit or budget line will not carry the higher unit price. A real constraint, and a legitimate reason.
- Colour usage is uneven. Buying 414X in all four colours when magenta turns over twice as fast as cyan strands toner.
Choose high yield when the device is a workhorse, the fleet is stable, and you want fewer cartridge changes and fewer purchase transactions per year — which, on the government side, also means fewer card runs to document.
Three things to check before you standardise a fleet
- The mandatory-source question. Toner cartridges are a well-populated category on the AbilityOne Procurement List, and FAR 13.201(e) carries the FAR 8.002 priority order down to micro-purchases. Search the specific part at abilityone.gov/procurement_list at the time of purchase.
- Recovered content. Printer and copier toner cartridges are a designated category under EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guideline, and FAR 23.103(a) directs agencies to procure sustainable products to the maximum extent practicable — a requirement that reaches micro-purchases through FAR 13.201(f).
- Manufacturer supply-security features. Some printers apply firmware-level supply authentication, and manufacturers publish which models are affected. What to put on the requisition
Six fields make a toner requisition unambiguous: exact printer model, cartridge family and part number, colour, standard or high yield, declared yield with the ISO/IEC standard named, and quantity with unit of issue. Add "new / remanufactured / either" if you are open to alternatives, and state the minimum acceptable yield rather than a brand — that is the salient characteristic a brand-name-or-equal evaluation actually turns on under FAR 52.211-6.

What is the difference between HP 58A and 58X?
They are the same cartridge family for the same printers; the X is the high-yield version. HP publishes a declared yield of approximately 3,000 pages for the 58A (CF258A) and approximately 10,000 pages for the 58X (CF258X), both under ISO/IEC 19752 at roughly 5% page coverage. The X costs more per cartridge and almost always less per page.
What does ISO/IEC 19752 mean on a toner cartridge?

How many pages does an HP 414X print?
HP publishes approximately 7,500 pages for the 414X black (W2020X) and approximately 6,000 pages each for the 414X cyan, yellow and magenta (W2021X, W2022X, W2023X), under ISO/IEC 19798. The standard-yield 414A publishes approximately 2,400 pages black and 2,100 pages per colour.
Is high-yield toner always cheaper?
Cheaper per page, in almost every case; more expensive per cartridge, always. Divide the quoted cartridge price by the declared yield for each option and compare the results. High yield is the wrong choice when the printer is low volume, the device is being retired, or the budget line cannot carry the higher unit price.
Why does my cartridge print fewer pages than the rated yield?
Almost always page coverage. Declared yields assume roughly 5% coverage of the printable area. Dense tables, full-width headers, shaded forms and heavy graphics can double or triple that, and the cartridge delivers proportionally fewer pages. Track your own pages-per-cartridge for a quarter and plan against that number rather than the published one.
